So much more

So much more

The next contraction his head came out followed quickly by his shoulders and then body. I heard Christy tell me to take my baby and I reached down to hold him. This was the most amazing thing; I LOVED being able to pull him up to me when I was ready to. It took a second to realize that I was holding onto him and could bring him out of the water up to me. The memory of that moment will always be a favorite of mine.

Never in my wildest dreams

Never in my wildest dreams

Once I became pregnant I knew that I wanted a midwife as my care provider and after interviewing both out-of-hospital and in hospital I chose the out-of-hospital midwife. My first birth went beautifully and we had a daughter born in the water. Here is my story of my second birth. A birth that showed me even more how much strength I had and how much I was capable of accomplishing.

Valerie's Birth Story - Noelle is here!

Valerie's Birth Story - Noelle is here!

I got back in the birth pool for some major pain relief, and it helped. Now the contractions were gripping me and I asked for Troy. Kelli called him in and he held my hands as I sat back or squatted in the water. Kelli sweetly offered all the expected support measures, and all I wanted was her to sit quietly and watch, and talk me quietly through each wave. She did that and it really got me through. Sometimes I would look over at Christy and her sweet broad smile would give me confidence to keep going also.

I'll NEVER forget that moment

I'll NEVER forget that moment

Looking back, I see that Christy allowed for Perry and I to bring this baby into the world ourselves, with them only being there for support. How awesome is that!? So, when I felt the sensation to push, I pushed... it took about one hour, but soon, I felt babyʼs head emerge! I reached down and felt our babyʼs head and Iʼll NEVER forget that moment or the feeling that came over me! I quickly pushed again and our little baby girl was born in the water, only 4 hours after our arrival to the birth center!

You ARE doing it!

You ARE doing it!

I stood up to go downstairs and get in the birth pool. I remember it felt like I had a bowling ball between my legs and Kathy said I had the walk of a woman about to give birth. Now I was feeling more energized because I knew I was about to have my baby in my arms. I got that adrenaline rush and was so ready and happy to be finally getting her out! I got in the pool and got on my hands and knees because it just felt right at the time and waited for a wave to come. I did feel some trepidation for what I was about to have to do, but I knew the only way past it was through it.

Beyond amazing

I had progressed pretty quickly and my contractions were way more intense than I remember them being with my first, and I had the lovely privilege of making the journey from Fort Worth to Argyle on all fours in the back seat, praying that I wouldn’t give birth on the side of I-35!

Once I saw Christy come into view I felt a million times better – I was now free to relax that baby on out! I know Christy was pretty happy she wasn’t delivering on the side of I-35 too...

I think it's time to have a baby

I think it's time to have a baby

By this point, time seemed to evade me completely. An hour felt like a minute and vice-versa. I labored mostly in the living room on our couch with Summer rubbing my pressure points behind me and Andrew always close by encouraging me and letting me squeeze his hands until they were bruised. He even had a contraction tracker app on his iPhone that helped keep us on track with the progress. I barely noticed when the camera crew showed up and started filming. I was in the “zone”, incredibly focused...

I felt a big pop

I felt a big pop

It is such a strange feeling to birth a baby -- her head, after all the stretching, popped out, and the rest of her just tumbled into Christy’s and Colin’s hands. It was such a joyful moment to see her for the first time and marvel at her little fingers and toes. She laid on my chest for quite some time while Colin and I just looked at her. It was amazing how alert she was.
